Contacting professionals

Mark Conlan
  • Mark Conlan is an illustrator I have been so inspired by for a long time and is definitely one of my favourite illustrators.
  • I contacted him last year for my creative report but it might be worth contacting him again to ask for some further advice
Studio MM
  • a creative studio co-founded by Madeleine Penny and Matt Curtis
  • they also launched the Times science magazine Eureka
  • worked with clients such as Nike and Four Seasons
  • I'd love to get involved with a contemporary design studio such as this one so I could potentially ask them about any up and coming projects they are working on
Liv Siddall
  • Joined It's Nice That as an intern in 2011 before becoming online editor and features editor. She wrote 1769 articles which she was there before leaving in 2015
  • founded and edits the monthly Rough Trade magazine
  • She also edits Banger Magazine which is a magazine I have been commissioned for so this could be something good to mention
  • I could ask her advice about the creative industry and good ways of getting involved
c-ll-ct-vl-y studio
  • small design studio based in Brick Lane
  • frequently commission illustrators for their magazine
Jealous London
  • Jealous is a print studio based in london. I want to get into contact with a few different print studios and potentially try and get some work experience
  • I could think about sending them one of my screen prints instead of sending them an email to try and catch their attention more
  • As well as contacting them I could also submit to two projects they run as well, one of which is a mural project which is perfect
People of Print/Marcroy Smith:
  • Marcroy Smith is the founder of People of Print
  • I want to contact him asking for advice about my screen printing practise and also the creative industry in general
  • Need to find out a bit more about People of Print before I contact him

Website Research

Egle Zvirblyte

  • you can immediately see a whole range of her work! also you can't see on the screenshot but the images change of their own accord which is a nice touch
  • something else you can't see- when you hover your mouse over one of the images the title of the project/piece of work pops up with a link that takes you to another page, where you can find all the information about it
  • you can see straight away her go-to colour palette
  • there are clear links to her work, shop and contact information
  • her contact page is clear and concise, and she's added a little bit of humour which shows a bit of her personality

Cecile Gariephy

  • slightly different interface- you can scroll across to look at all her work which is nice!
  • though you can't click on any of the images to find out more information about them
  • nice bold and clear links
  • it looks very neat and tidy which makes it really easy to look at and navigate around. the muted colour palette helps with this although I think it's just her most recent work at the beginning so it could be any colours!
  • the white space draws more attention to her illustrations
  • her 'about' page is clear although could do with one of her illustrations next to it

ZEBU

  • similar to Egle's you can immediately see a range of their work
  • although they also include blank spaces of colour to break up the images a little which I think is good! they also tie in with the colour scheme
  • the top three images on the page are links to 'screen prints', 'paintings' and 'murals' which are the main points of their practise. quite clever as these are the first three images you see! and when you click on them it takes you to a page with all their work in that particular category
  • little side-bar stays the same throughout the website
  • i like the bold type
  • there is a little animation on the 'about' page which makes it quite fun

Nous Vous

  • quite a fun little title page with a link to each of their individual works and then a link to a page of their collective work
  • each of the individual pages has a bio which explains a little bit about each of them
  • clear and bold links, lots of white space
  • use of black and white is quite contemporary
  • the side bar being vertical is a bit different to it being along the top of the page
  • i like how they have put the type over the imagery in the first page- it works well together

Further North

  • Last year me and some friends and course mates exhibited our work at a bar in Leeds called further north, and all presented square formatted work alongside each other. Off the back of these we were given the opportunity to display our work at Further North, a small bar/cafe in Chapel Allerton.
  • I think the display looks really good and I kind of like the fact none of it's framed or anything; makes it look quite unique
  • This will be staying in the bar until further notice so hopefully it'll be a good opportunity for people to see our work and maybe some more potential exhibitions in the future!

SHAQ & NICOLE: Lawrence and Thomas Slater at Beach London

  • recently Lawrence Slater and his brother Thomas curated an exhitbion at Beach London's gallery
  • The exhibition was made up of big paintings by Lawrence and small drawings by Thomas. I quite like how much their work contrasts with each others as it makes for a very diverse exhibition
  • I love Lawrence Slaters big bold wooden sculptures. it's a really interesting idea for an exhibition and is definitely unique. The colours are striking and fun and exude a very playful vibe
  • it's really interesting to see an illustrator produce work in this way

Manifesto

  • I really want to concentrate on making work that make people feel something positive! I know that's an extremely broad statement but I like the idea that a piece of my work could make someone feel happy or calm or energetic
  • ENJOY MAKING WORK ! I feel like in the past i've got stuck on briefs or pieces of work I wasn't enjoying which has wasted my time and even put a bit of a downer on my confidence.
  • explore different ways and processes of image making. Something I'd love to get into is screen printing so I'm making this one of my aims this year
  • get my work out there! apply for more exhibitions, make a website & post more consistently on my instagram account
  • BE HAPPY !
