Hanbury Hall Notes

  • Big Active & Blink: online and social media are more important than you think and can be really beneficial to up and coming artists
  • create context in your work, have a tone of voice, good ideas, individuality, professionalism, this is what clients/agencies are after
  • collaborate
  • don't sign over rights to a client- non disclosure agreement
  • agents can be helpful with chasing up payments etc but will also take a cut of your fee
  • weigh up whether a job is worth it- are you getting payed enough? is there exposure worth it?
  • THE DOTS: portfolio masterclasses
  • helps you get work for projects which suit you
  • B&A: before contacting professionals do your research. address them correctly
  • tailor submissions to agencies/companies
  • behance
  • carry on with personal practise and self directed briefs and try not to focus entirely on client based work; it can end up you loosing your creative voice
  • gifs/moving image for online promotion
  • Its Nice That/Nobrow: uses instagram to source talent so treat this like a portfolio; keep a consistent visual representation
  • instead of submissions they tend to be more interested in emails with an image and link to your website/online portfolio
  • show your personality through your practise
  • It's Nice That graduates- something to apply for
  • they also offer internships

Print Stuff

Excited that we've got a table at Print Stuff again this year! Instead of it represented the whole illustration course though this time I am going to be running the table alongside Meg, Char, Annie and Kieran as part of our collective OK Sure. I think this will be a really good opportunity for us as not only a collective but for each of our individual practises as well. As there's only 5 of us we'll each have more space to sell some different things, and I think each of our practises contrasts and compliments each other equally. I also think we'll be a lot more organised this year, and we've already all spoken about making prints and other items we can potentially sell as well. I'd like to make a small range of screen prints to sell, and also maybe think about producing some postcards or greetings cards to sell as these might sell better as i'll be able to sell them for a bit less. I also need to think about some branding and how i'm going to package my prints to make them look professional.
