AOI TALK

  • a website is really important so make one if you don't already have one; works as a great online portfolio and very important when applying for jobs etc
  • it's a good idea to keep all your social media names and your website domain the same to avoid confusion
  • make sure your website is mobile friendly as well as working on a desktop
  • Make sure you're only posting work online/on your website & portfolio that you like or there's a possibility of getting commissioned for similar things
  • have an image heavy website and make sure this is the main focus. Keep it simple with clear links and nothing too busy
  • make sure there's enough information and contact details on your website so people will easily be able to contact you
  • keep files low res and try and copyright every image to avoid anyone stealing your work
  • keep social media and website up to date
  • in terms of freelancing, make sure there is a written contract. state the basics, how much it'll cost, the deadline etc
  • register for income tax three months after starting
  • quote clients accurately instead of giving a rough estimate
  • don't ever be pressured into working for free
  • don't undercharge
  • make sure to get a deposit, and charge for cancellations and start charging after a certain amount of changes to the design
  • keep track of every expense within a job
  • take into consideration the size of the client & who you are working for
  • right of paternity- automatic right as creator of the work
  • right of integrity- work not to be subjected to any derogatory treatment, editing/cropping etc
  • if you aren't sure about a commission ask for help/advice
